NYC Apartment – Airbnb

Last October I visited NYC with my girlfriend. Before leaving London we checked hundreds of hotels online; there are plenty of specialized websites where you can browse pictures, prices and so on. Trip Advisor is very useful for reading previous reviews and checking real pictures of the hotel.

I recommend checking out Trip Advisor since many hotels use photoshop and wide lenses to make the rooms look bigger and nicer than they are in reality.

NYC is particularly expensive with an average of $300.00 per night in a decent and well located hotel.

Then we found Airbnb and we were quite sceptical as we never used it before. But you can find affordable and cool places all over the place. Once a friend confirmed how well it works we didn’t think much and booked this awesome apartment in Manhattan.

It’s a very simple process. You book the dates and make the payment online. As this is not a hotel they take a deposit that you get back as soon as you leave the place. As in many other websites you can find previous reviews and a rating system for every accommodation.

In our case we met Ro (the owner) at the apartment the day we arrived. He explained the basics and gave us some tips about the city. The most amazing one was a restaurant he recommended, walking distance from the flat and the best sushi I have ever had.

The restaurant is called Sushi of Gari. As suggested by Ro we ordered the Chef’s tasting menu. The best advice I can give you, go whenever you are in town.

Moving on with my Airbnb experience, the flat looks like what you see in the pictures. It was very clean and felt like home for a few days. By the way, there is a blowdryer. I had to email in advance for confirming this detail, which is very important if you are a woman or you are travelling with one. Ro confirmed that he had to make sure there was one available after having been asked by every single guest.

There are many reasons for choosing Airbnb next time you travel. Staying in a nice hotel is always a pleasure but sometimes the budget is tight or you simply want to live like a local. Either way, on this website you can find very central and well located flats.

My recommendation in NYC is this stunning pre-war apartment. It is cleverly managed and well decorated. The owner is a Photographer and Interior Designer, so expect the best detail. He also has another apartment in Manhattan, check it out.

Cool apartment! Spending Christmas in New York is on my to-do-before-turning-30 list.
